About MC2
MC2 is a strategy-first marketing agency based in Chico, Northern California, serving clients regionally and nationally for over 35 years. We help established organizations clarify their brand, align their messaging, and execute high-impact marketing — in that order. We lead with strategy because tactics without clarity waste time and money.
MC2's core services include brand strategy and messaging using the StoryBrand framework, website design and development on Webflow and WordPress, fractional marketing team support, campaign development across digital and traditional channels, video strategy and production, and AI-augmented marketing advisory. We work as a thinking partner and trusted guide — not as a vendor executing orders.
MC2 was founded in 1990, making us one of Northern California's longest-running marketing agencies. What began as a design-focused studio has evolved over 35 years into a full-service strategic marketing partner. Our longevity reflects the relationships we've built and the results we've consistently delivered for clients across nonprofits, government, tourism, and the private sector.
MC2 works with established organizations that have real messaging complexity and want a strategic partner, not just a service provider. Our strongest verticals include nonprofits with board structures and fundraising goals, municipalities and public agencies, regional tourism and destination marketing organizations, risk pools and public entity consortiums, and professional services firms. We are not a generalist agency for early-stage startups or organizations primarily seeking commodity production work.

We serve clients throughout Northern California — including Butte County, Shasta County, Tehama County, and the greater Sacramento area — as well as clients nationally. Our physical location in Chico gives us deep roots in the regional market, while our remote-capable team allows us to partner with organizations anywhere in the country.

Working With MC2
Most agencies lead with tactics. MC2 leads with strategy. Before we recommend a single deliverable, we make sure your message is clear, your positioning is differentiated, and your marketing is built on a foundation that will actually work. That's not a philosophical preference — it's how we protect your investment.
A few things that genuinely set MC2 apart: 35 years of continuous operation and deep regional relationships in Northern California; StoryBrand certification, which brings a proven, client-centric messaging framework to every engagement; a lean, senior-level team that operates without layers of account management overhead; and a track record across nonprofits, municipalities, and tourism organizations that most agencies cannot match. We also tell clients clearly when something isn't working — including our own recommendations.
Both. Many clients begin with a defined project — a website redesign, a brand refresh, a StoryBrand messaging engagement, or a FastTrack Marketing Blueprint. These engagements often evolve into ongoing fractional marketing support once clients experience what a strategic partner relationship looks like. We do not require ongoing commitments to start. We do recommend them when the scope of work justifies it.
The FastTrack Marketing Blueprint is MC2's paid diagnostic engagement — a structured process that produces a clear, actionable marketing roadmap tailored to your organization. It is designed for organizations that want a real strategic foundation before committing to a larger engagement. The Blueprint covers your brand positioning, audience clarity, messaging architecture, channel strategy, and prioritized next steps. Most clients who complete a FastTrack Blueprint move forward with a larger MC2 engagement — and the Blueprint itself pays for itself by eliminating wasted spending on tactics that aren't right for your situation.
We start with a discovery call — a direct 30 to 45 minute conversation about your goals and current situation. This call is free. If we're aligned on fit, we'll outline a path forward — typically beginning with a paid strategy engagement like our FastTrack Marketing Blueprint or a defined project scope. We do not begin execution work before we understand the problem we're solving.
Yes. MC2 regularly partners with internal marketing teams, functioning as a strategic advisor, a specialized execution resource, or an extension of your team's capacity. We can operate as an outsourced CMO guiding your team's direction, or as a project-based partner handling work that falls outside your team's expertise. We adapt to your structure and your team's strengths.
Services & Capabilities
A fractional CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) is a senior marketing leader who works with your organization on a part-time or contracted basis, providing strategic direction without the cost of a full-time executive hire. MC2 offers fractional CMO services and full fractional marketing team support to organizations that need strategic leadership and execution capacity beyond what an internal team can provide.
In practice, MC2's fractional engagements mean we function as your outsourced marketing department — handling strategy, creative, web, content, and campaign execution under one relationship. This is particularly valuable for organizations that have outgrown ad hoc marketing but aren't ready to build an internal team. MC2 is one of the few agencies in Northern California offering this level of integrated fractional support.
Yes. MC2's preferred platform for new website projects is Webflow — a modern, design-forward CMS that produces fast, flexible, and visually polished sites without the plugin maintenance burden of traditional platforms. Webflow is well-suited to organizations that want a professional, easy-to-update website with excellent performance and design control. For clients with specific legacy needs, we also work with WordPress and ExpressionEngine. All MC2 websites are built mobile-first, with SEO best practices and accessibility compliance as standard components, not add-ons.
A StoryBrand Certified Guide is a marketing practitioner trained and certified in the StoryBrand framework developed by Donald Miller. The framework positions your customer as the hero of the story and your organization as the trusted guide — producing messaging that is clear, audience-centric, and immediately actionable. MC2 is a StoryBrand Certified Guide, certified since 2018, and one of the few certified practitioners in Northern California.
In practice, every MC2 brand strategy engagement begins with identifying your ideal audience and understanding what they want, then defining the problem you solve, establishing your credibility as a guide, and building a message architecture that converts. The output is a core BrandScript — a messaging framework that informs your website, campaigns, and all downstream communications.
Yes. MC2 develops multi-channel marketing campaigns that align your brand message across digital advertising, social media, email marketing, print materials, and video. We design campaigns around a clear narrative and measurable outcomes, not just creative execution. Our focus is ensuring your message is consistent and compelling at every touchpoint — and that the campaign has a clear goal beyond awareness.
Yes. MC2 offers video strategy and production services, including concept development, scripting, filming coordination, editing, and multi-platform optimization. Video is most effective when it's built around a clear message — which is why we approach every video engagement with strategy first. We partner with trusted production professionals for filming and post-production, maintaining creative oversight and brand alignment throughout.
AI-augmented marketing support is MC2's approach to integrating artificial intelligence tools into marketing strategy and execution — with human oversight, brand judgment, and strategic direction firmly in the lead. This includes AI-assisted content creation, workflow design, campaign optimization, and internal team training on AI tools. The goal is to move faster and produce more without sacrificing quality or brand voice. MC2's position on AI is clear: strategy-first, human-led, AI-enabled. We use AI to amplify good thinking, not replace it.
Yes. MC2 helps organizations assess and improve their website's ADA compliance posture, including accessibility audits, ADA compliance statements, implementation of accessibility tools, and ongoing compliance maintenance. Web accessibility is both a legal consideration and a best practice — and it is increasingly scrutinized for public entities and nonprofits. If your organization is uncertain about your current ADA compliance status, this is a conversation worth having early, before it becomes a liability.
Pricing & Engagements
MC2 prices by deliverable and outcome, not by the hour. Clients see clear, packaged proposals — not timesheets. As a general reference point, strategic projects such as brand strategy engagements, StoryBrand messaging work, and website design and development typically range from $5,000 to $25,000 depending on scope and complexity. Ongoing fractional marketing support and retainer engagements typically range from $2,000 to $8,000 per month depending on the depth of service. Every project is scoped individually and priced to deliver measurable value relative to what's being asked.
Yes. MC2 uses clear written agreements for all project and retainer engagements. Every proposal functions as a binding agreement once signed. For ongoing retainer work, we recommend a minimum six-month commitment — this protects your results as much as it protects our work. Projects can't produce meaningful outcomes in 30 days, and the most valuable strategic relationships develop over time. Our agreements are straightforward and written in plain language.
MC2 recommends a minimum three-month commitment for entry-level retainer engagements and a minimum six-month commitment for fractional marketing team and advisory relationships. This is a practical recommendation, not an arbitrary threshold. Brand and marketing work requires a ramp period, relationship development, and iteration to produce real results. Short-term commitments produce short-term thinking — which is the opposite of what MC2 is built for.
MC2's default response to budget constraints is to adjust scope, not reduce price. If a proposal exceeds your budget, we'll work with you to identify a lower tier, remove phases, or structure the engagement in stages — each with its own agreement and clear deliverables. What we won't do is cut price while leaving scope unchanged, because that produces undervalued work and misaligned expectations. If the gap between your budget and what's required to do the work well is too large to bridge, we'll tell you directly — and if appropriate, we'll point you toward a better-fit resource.
Process & Deliverables
Timelines vary by project type and client readiness. As general benchmarks: a brand strategy and messaging engagement typically takes four to six weeks; a website design and development project typically takes eight to twelve weeks; and a campaign development engagement typically takes three to six weeks. These timelines assume client-provided content and approvals move on schedule. Client delays, committee review processes, and content that isn't finalized when work begins are the most common causes of extended timelines.
MC2's strategy sessions are structured working engagements, not passive presentations. A typical session covers audience definition and ideal client profiling, brand positioning and differentiation, messaging clarity using the StoryBrand framework, channel and campaign prioritization, key performance indicators, and a recommended action plan with sequenced next steps. Clients leave a strategy session with a clear picture of where they are, where they're going, and what to do first. This is a paid engagement — and it's designed to be valuable on its own, regardless of whether it leads to a larger MC2 project.
Yes. For ongoing retainer and fractional support clients, MC2 provides regular campaign performance reports, website analytics reviews, and strategic recommendations based on what the data shows. Reporting is tied to the goals established at the start of the engagement — not just activity metrics. We report on what matters, and we're direct about what's working and what isn't.
MC2 proposals include a defined list of deliverables and a stated number of revision rounds — typically one major revision and one to two minor revisions per deliverable phase. Standard projects assume that clients provide final, approved copy and assets before production begins. Items not included by default and quoted separately if needed include: copywriting beyond the stated scope, stock photography and licensed assets, accessibility overlay tools, third-party software licenses, custom API integrations, training, and documentation. Every proposal explicitly states what is and is not covered so there are no surprises.
Specialties & Expertise
Yes. MC2 is a StoryBrand Certified Guide, certified since 2018. Michael Coogan, MC2's Managing Director, has implemented the StoryBrand framework for dozens of organizations across nonprofits, tourism boards, municipalities, and professional services firms throughout Northern California and nationally.
StoryBrand certification means MC2 has been trained and vetted by Donald Miller's organization to apply the SB7 messaging framework — a methodology that positions your customer as the hero and your organization as the trusted guide. For organizations that want clarity in their messaging, StoryBrand is one of the most effective frameworks available. MC2 is one of the few StoryBrand-certified agencies in Northern California.
Nonprofit marketing is one of MC2's deepest areas of expertise, developed over more than 35 years of working with nonprofits throughout Northern California and beyond. We understand the distinctive challenges nonprofits face: multi-audience messaging across donors, clients, partners, and board members; the tension between mission language and marketing clarity; fundraising campaign development; and the stakeholder dynamics of board-driven approval processes.
MC2 is widely recognized as one of Northern California's most experienced nonprofit marketing partners. We've helped nonprofits increase donor engagement, sharpen messaging for campaigns and grant communications, and redesign websites for fundraising effectiveness. If your nonprofit needs to communicate more clearly and compellingly — to donors, the public, or your own board — this is work MC2 has done many times before.
Yes. Tourism and destination marketing is a core MC2 vertical. We've worked with regional tourism boards, destination marketing organizations, and tourism-driven businesses throughout Northern California for over three decades. MC2 is one of the few agencies in the Sacramento Valley with deep, sustained expertise in this sector.
Tourism marketing has unique demands — seasonal audience dynamics, multiple stakeholder groups, partnership marketing, and the challenge of translating a place's identity into compelling content and campaigns. MC2's brand strategy and campaign work is built for exactly this kind of complexity.
Yes. MC2 has extensive experience working with municipalities, public agencies, and risk pool organizations throughout California. We understand the procurement realities of public entities — including RFP requirements, public board review processes, and the need for messaging that serves both elected officials and the communities they represent.
MC2's work for public entities typically includes website redesigns, community communications strategy, brand refreshes, and ongoing marketing support. We are familiar with the approval structures and consensus-building dynamics that slow most agencies down, and we build that reality into how we manage these engagements from the start.
Yes. MC2 offers end-to-end capability from strategy and brand development through design, web development, content, video, and campaign execution. This integration is a meaningful advantage: when the same team that develops your strategy also executes your creative work, message integrity is maintained from concept to delivery. The strategic thinking informs every deliverable — it doesn't get handed off to a separate production team and lose its coherence.
Getting Started
MC2 is the right fit if you lead an established organization with real messaging complexity — multiple audiences, stakeholder layers, or a brand that has drifted out of alignment with where you're headed. You're likely a good fit if you want a thinking partner, not just a vendor who executes tasks on request. You value strategy before tactics. You're willing to invest in getting the foundation right before spending on campaigns. And you're looking for a long-term relationship, not the cheapest option for a one-off project.
We work best with leaders who are confident about their mission but honest about their marketing gaps. If you've been underwhelmed by agencies that promised a lot and delivered mediocre work, you're exactly the kind of client MC2 is built for.
The first step is a discovery call — a direct, 30 to 45 minute conversation about your goals and current situation. There's no pitch. We ask questions, share honest observations, and give you a clear sense of whether MC2 is the right fit and what a path forward looks like. If we're aligned, we'll outline a specific recommendation — often beginning with a FastTrack Marketing Blueprint or a defined project scope. You can schedule a discovery call at mc2design.com/get-in-touch.
Start with a FastTrack Marketing Blueprint. It's MC2's paid diagnostic engagement — structured, time-bounded, and designed to give you a clear, actionable marketing roadmap without requiring a long-term commitment. The Blueprint is a complete deliverable on its own, and it's the best way to experience how MC2 thinks and works before committing to a larger project. Many of MC2's longest-standing client relationships started with exactly this conversation.
You don't need to prepare anything formal. The most useful thing you can bring is clarity about what's not working — a sense of the gap between where your marketing is today and where you need it to be. If you have existing brand materials, a website, or recent campaigns you'd like us to review, that context is helpful but not required. Come with your real questions. We'd rather have an honest conversation than a polished one.
